Suddenly fainting may not be due to heatstroke but a “Syncope.” Many people may think that this condition only occurs in the elderly, but current information shows that young people can also suffer from it. Due to lifestyles involving hard work and little rest, sudden fainting can occur and be life-threatening. Statistics show that those who have fainted without a known cause have a 6% death rate in the first year, with 4% dying suddenly. If the cause is heart disease, the death rate in the first year is as high as 18-33%, with 24% being sudden deaths. With this hidden danger, let's explore what causes syncope and how dangerous it can be to life, together with Muang Thai Life Assurance.

 “Syncope” can be Life-Threatening!

Lets get to know syncope and its symptoms:

A syncopal attack is a temporary loss of consciousness and balance, with various specific symptoms such as sudden fainting, lasting from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. During this time, the person is unresponsive, may fall to the ground, lose balance, and may experience hand or foot spasms, eyes fixed for a moment, sweating on the face, and cannot remember the event of fainting. Some may regain consciousness on their own, but this depends on the individual's underlying health. Some may have warning symptoms such as feeling light-headed, dizziness, unsteadiness, blurred vision, or seeing flashes of light, cold extremities, and nausea.

What causes syncope?

Syncope can arise from various causes, such as:

  • Direct heart diseases, like coronary artery disease, valvular stenosis, arrhythmias (both fast and slow), abnormal heart muscle contraction, acute heart failure, or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
  • Autonomic nervous system dysfunction, such as after coughing, sneezing, straining during defecation or urination, being in crowded places, or in extreme heat, after exercising, or in chronic diseases affecting the nervous system, nerve degeneration, and diabetes, which can be harmful to the spinal cord.
  • Blood loss or dehydration.
  • Certain medications, especially antihypertensive drugs, diuretics, antidepressants, and prostate medications.

Preventing or managing syncope can reduce severity and prevent accidents from fainting, such as getting enough rest, avoiding prolonged standing in extreme heat, refraining from alcohol and smoking, exercising regularly. In cases of dehydration, drink plenty of water, eat meals on time, and for those who have fainted before, it’s advisable to sit while urinating, avoid straining during defecation or urination, and avoid strong coughing or sneezing. If you feel faint, do not force yourself to walk; instead, sit down and lie flat to help blood flow to the brain better.
