Cancer patients have severe symptoms and needs ongoing treatment for each stage. Due to modern treatment, survival rate is higher and health conditions from treatment are all right. However, patients need to take care of their health for recovery without recurrence.

What is cancer?

What is cancer?

Cancer is caused by abnormal cells of organs. Cells grow abnormally and develop to tumor, then spread to surrounding organs or other body parts through blood circulation system or lymphatic system. 2 risk factors for cancer are below.

  • External factors such as carcinogen in foods, air, drinks, medicine, exposure to radiation, virus, bacteria and liver flukes, etc. People who are at risk for cancer are smokers and drinkers, those who like high-fat foods, salty foods, foods that contain saltpeter, aflatoxin such as peanuts, and burnt foods. Outdoor workers also have high risk of having cancer.
  • Internal factors such as genetic abnormalities, Immunodeficiency and malnutrition, etc. People who are at risk for cancer are those whose family members have cancer, carriers of hepatitis B and AIDS etc.

In spite of getting rid of cancer, recurrence happens if external or internal factors exist. Cancer stage, treatment, patient condition are also causes of recurrence.

Side effects of cancer treatment

Side effects of cancer treatment

Cancer treatment targets to kill cancer cells, but normal cells might be killed too. As a result, patients might have side effects and severity is based on many factors such as cancer type, body part, and treatment volume. Side effects mostly disappear after completing treatment, but patients need to continue taking care of themselves. Side effects are shown below.

  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight change (increase or decrease)
  • Sore mouth
  • Teeth and gum issues
  • Changes in taste and smell
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Lactose intolerance (cow milk)
  • Fatigue or depression

3 care factors after cancer treatment

3 care factors after cancer treatment

Patients are weak and easy to be infected after the treatment. So, good care will enhance treatment effectiveness and survival rate.

  • Food: Should eat freshly cooked foods by focusing on high protein to build cells such as fish, milk, boiled eggs, and drink sufficient water around 6 – 8 glasses/ day; moreover, patients should avoid overnight cooked foods, fermented or smoked foods, raw foods as well as reducing fat, salt, sugar and alcoholic beverages.
  • Avoid pollution: Should not be in environment that is full of pollution which might trigger cancer such as vehicle pollution, smoke, etc. Patients with weak immune system will be worse.
  • Side effects: This is possible, but side effects normally disappear after completing treatment. Physicians prescribe medicine to prevent side effects during recovery. If symptoms occur, patients should discuss with physicians.

Besides foods, patients should have a rest fully, exercise, have mental care, join discussion or activities with family to recover body and mind after treatment and avoid recurrence.

Everyone is at risk of having cancer. Ongoing treatment and high budget are needed. So, having health insurance before getting sick is important because it allows you to have treatment comfortably and have no worry about medical bills.
