As soon as summer hits, one unavoidable factor is the sunlight, which contains three types of ultraviolet radiation (UV): UVA, UVB, and UVC, each with varying intensities. The UV radiation that is harmful and impacts our bodies are:

  • UVA: Excessive exposure can damage DNA in skin cells, increasing the risk of skin cancer, premature wrinkles, and cataracts.
  • UVB: The main cause of sunburn, it can also damage DNA in skin cells and increase the risk of skin cancer.

Seeing the dangers of sunlight, it's recommended to avoid direct sun exposure between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, as this is when UV radiation is at its highest. But if you can't avoid it, try to stay in the shade, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, hats, and sunglasses. The most important thing you cannot skip is applying sunscreen every day.

It can be seen that the dangers of sunlight have numerous harmful effects on our health, such as damaging the eyes and causing cataracts, sunburn, skin inflammation, premature wrinkles, or even increasing the risk of skin cancer. In addition to the harmful effects of sunlight, extreme heat can also lead to dehydration and heatstroke. Therefore, during the hot summer months, we need to prepare ourselves with these simple tips:

  • Drink water regularly, at least 8 glasses a day, but avoid drinking too much as it may negatively affect your body. You can calculate the proper amount of water by using the formula: Body weight (kg) ÷ 30 = the amount of water (in liters) your body needs per day. For example, if your weight is 50 kg, you should aim to drink about 66 liters of water a day. Additionally, avoid chewing ice or drinking very cold water as it can cause your body to struggle to adjust, leading to internal organ strain, such as sudden stomach pain.
  • Avoid alcoholic drinks, as hot weather can cause alcohol to be absorbed into the bloodstream more quickly than usual.
  • For sports enthusiasts, exercise in the morning or evening when the sun is not too strong. Exercising under intense sun and heat may lead to heatstroke or dehydration. Be sure to monitor your symptoms and drink water regularly.
  • Before leaving the house, apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher, and wear items to protect you from sunlight, such as sunglasses and hats.
  • Wear clothes that allow for good ventilation and are light-colored.
  • Children, the elderly, and people with chronic conditions should stay in rooms with good air circulation.

Although sunlight is something we cannot avoid in our daily lives, we can take steps to protect ourselves and reduce the risks of diseases associated with it. This is especially important for people who work outdoors frequently, as they are at higher risk for health issues. However, no matter what profession you have, it is essential to take good care of yourself: get an annual health checkup, ensure adequate rest, and exercise regularly. This is because illness can affect not only your career but also your family.
