Food Allergies: A Close Danger Not to Be Overlooked

May 04, 2022

5 minutes

When it comes to eating, what you consume every day could pose unexpected dangers. Food allergies are a serious condition that can affect both children and adults, causing reactions in different systems of the body. Symptoms vary from mild to severe, and in some cases, a sudden allergic reaction can be life-threatening. That’s why it’s essential to pay close attention to your body, recognize potential triggers, and be cautious about what you eat. Knowing which foods you’re allergic to can help you prevent severe allergic episodes in time.

What Is a Food Allergy?

A food allergy occurs when the immune system reacts abnormally to certain foods, perceiving them as harmful. This triggers an unwanted immune response that may recur each time the same food is consumed. Food allergies can affect multiple systems in the body, with symptoms such as:

  • Skin reactions: The most common signs include sudden hives, swollen eyes or lips, eczema flare-ups, or contact rashes.
  • Digestive system issues: Symptoms may include vomiting, chronic diarrhea, bloody stools, or gastrointestinal bleeding.
  • Respiratory symptoms: Persistent runny nose, nasal congestion, coughing, wheezing, or difficulty breathing.
  • Cardiovascular symptoms: Dizziness, fainting, or loss of consciousness.

Food allergies may present as chronic, recurring symptoms or appear suddenly and severely. In cases of acute allergic reactions occurring within minutes to two hours after eating, the condition can escalate into anaphylaxis, a life-threatening emergency. Signs include severe skin reactions, chest tightness, difficulty breathing, and dangerously low blood pressure. If this occurs, seek immediate medical attention, as it can be fatal.

Food Allergies: Can They Go Away?

Food allergies can appear suddenly or persist for a long time. In many cases, children who develop allergies early in life may eventually outgrow them. The likelihood of recovery depends on both the individual and the food allergen. For example, children who are allergic to cow’s milk may see their condition improve as they grow older, with a recovery rate of up to 70–90%.

On the other hand, some people who never experienced allergies during childhood may develop them later in adulthood. This often relates to changes in the body’s microbiome, the natural bacteria living in our system. Other contributing factors include frequent antibiotic use and insufficient dietary fiber, both of which may weaken the immune system and increase the risk of developing food allergies later in life.

How to Take Care of Yourself When Allergic Reactions Occur

Food allergies are becoming increasingly common worldwide. In many cases, they are accompanied by other allergic conditions such as eczema, asthma, or allergic rhinitis. Children are generally more likely to develop food allergies compared to adults. The most common food allergens in children include cow’s milk, soy milk, eggs, seafood, wheat, and nuts.

For adults, common triggers are often seafood, nuts, certain fruits, and meats.

Even with caution, accidental exposure to allergens can occur. Knowing how to respond quickly can make a life-saving difference:

  • Stay calm and ask someone nearby to call an ambulance immediately. Do not wait for symptoms to worsen.
  • If you feel dizzy or faint, sit or lie down in a comfortable position that allows easy breathing.
  • In emergencies, if you have access to antihistamines, take them while waiting for medical help. (Note: This is not a substitute for treatment.)
  • Go to the nearest hospital as quickly as possible. Doctors may recommend hospital admission for at least 24 hours of observation and monitoring.

Food allergies should never be underestimated. What seems like a minor issue can escalate to life-threatening conditions. Always pay attention to what you eat and monitor your body for unusual symptoms. For extra peace of mind, consider getting health insurance while you are still in good health, as insurance policies do not cover pre-existing conditions. Preparing early ensures you get complete coverage when you need it most.
