What is MRI?
Upon each diagnosis, you might need to get MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) too. It is not only for cancer diagnosis, but MRI is able to examine any part of the body. Accuracy of MRI is high and patients do not feel pain during MRI which allows physicians to easily diagnose and treat patients. Today, Muang Thai Life Assurance would like to share benefits and details of MRI.
How Does MRI Work?
Many of you might think about laying down in a tunnel and being scanned by radiation. However, radiation is not used in MRI, but it uses powerful magnet to examine organs. Owing to its high accuracy, physicians can diagnose body precisely without causing patients to feel pain and have danger from residual radiation.
Which Part of Body Can be Examined by MRI?
MRI can examine any part of the body if there is hydrogen. However, it also depends on hydrogen level of organs. Details of MRI examination are as follows.
- Brain such as ischemic stroke, dementia, paralysis, chronic headache
- Abdomen such as liver cancer, uterine anomalies, abdominal tumor, stone, benign prostatic hyperplasia
- Spine such as spondylosis, herniated disc, limb weakness, chronic back pain
- Bones and joints such as knee osteoarthritis, injury from sports
- Blood vessel such as blood clots or ectasia
What are Benefits of MRI?
Besides MRI’s accuracy and its painless procedures, there are other benefits, such as,
- No danger and no radiation
- Able to show nervous system precisely, especially brain, neck and spine; MRI shows better views than other radiology diagnosis.
- Able to diagnose liver lesion better than other tools.
- Able to diagnose lesion or abnormality regarding cancer, heart, blood vessel disease, bones, joints and muscles better than other tools.
- Able to show blood vessel images without contrast media.
- Less chance of being allergic to MRI contrast than computed tomography scan (CT scan).
- Able to get special techniques to check some chemicals.
What is Difference Between MRI and CT Scan?
about MRI, you might think that MRI and CT scan are similar; however, there are differences as follows.
- CT scan uses radiation and takes around 10 – 15 minutes. It diagnoses diseases of bones, lungs, internal organ injury, tumor, etc. However, contrast media is required to enhance image quality. Some patients might be allergic to contrast media and it may be toxic to kidney, especially old persons and patients with kidney disease.
- MRI uses powerful magnet which better shows details of soft tissue and abnormality than CT scan. Each MRI takes around 30 – 90 minutes and it can examine all internal organs. However, MRI is not suitable for patients with medical implants or metal implants because they have to be in huge magnetic field. Thus, patients must notify officers before getting MRI.
