Whether it's on the front or back of the package, the scientific information contained within can often be headache-inducing for many. However, for those who prioritize health and well-being, these nutritional labels are invaluable. They're not just for manufacturers to comply with regulations; they provide crucial information about the quantities of various nutrients and recommended daily intake. All of these factors have an impact on individual health. Today, let Muang Thai Life Assurance share some tips for reading nutrition labels.

What are nutrition labels? How important are they?

What are nutrition labels? How important are they?

Many may overlook or underestimate the importance of nutrition labels, but let's make it clear: nutrition labels are incredibly beneficial for consumers like us. They provide detailed information about the types and quantities of nutrients in a product, allowing us to make informed choices before consumption. Nutrition labels can be categorized into two types as follows:

  • Full nutrition label: It is a label that shows the type and amount of 15 important nutrients for labels with limited height. The full nutritional label can be displayed horizontally or crosswise as specified by the Ministry of Public Health’s announcement.
  • Abbreviated nutrition label: It is used in cases where there are mainly 8 or more nutrients out of the specified 15 items; the amount of the nutrients not being displayed is so small that it is considered zero. Therefore, there is no need to show it in its entirety.

Therefore, nutrition labels can be considered invaluable information for everyone's dietary choices. They help us determine whether we're getting the nutrients we need and are especially beneficial for those concerned about their health or managing chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, heart disease, and obesity.

 GDA nutrition labels

The GDA (Guideline Daily Amounts) labels, called in brief as "sweet, greasy, salty", may seem familiar to many, but their significance is often overlooked. These labels display essential nutritional information on the front of the packaging, including information on energy, sugar, fat and sodium. They serve to inform consumers before and after purchase, prompting them to consider their choices carefully. GDA labels consist of four main components:

  • Part 1: Provides information on the nutritional value per serving.
  • Part 2: Indicates the recommended portion size for consumption per serving.
  • Part 3: States the total energy content when consuming the entire package.
  • Part 4: Specifies the percentage of energy, sugar, fat, and sodium relative to the recommended daily intake.

For good health, don't ignore nutrition labels. You can see the nutritional value of the product right away from the number on the front so you can apply it to consuming a balanced diet suitable for your own health as follows.

  • Controling your weight: You should choose foods with low energy content containing no more than 5% saturated fat to reduce the risk of NCDs. You should not consume more than 2,000 kilocalories of energy per day.
  • Being afraid of excess sugar or having diabetes: Choose one with a low amount of sugar, no more than 24 grams/day, to control sugar levels.
  • Being worried about fat or having high blood fat levels: Consume no more than 20 grams of fat per meal to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
