As many people know, the 2022 Jay Festival is set to take place from 26 September – 4 October. Besides the general rule that those observing the festival must avoid meat and animal-based ingredients to prevent harm to living beings, there are also other food restrictions that participants need to follow.
Prohibited foods besides meat
In order not to break the Jay rules, those observing the Jay Festival have to be cautious about the following prohibited foods in addition to meat:
- Five pungent vegetables: Garlic, onions (red and white), rakkyo (a Chinese vegetable similar to solo garlic), garlic chives, and tobacco.
- Animal fats: Milk, butter, animal oils, and other animal-derived products.
- Strongly flavored foods: Extremely salty, sweet, sour, or spicy foods.
- Alcohol: Liquor, beer
- Meat: Pork, beef, fish, crab, shrimp, shellfish, or any other consumable animal flesh.
For those who strictly adhere to the rules, they also avoid eating from shared utensils that have been used by non-vegetarians. Additionally, their food has to be prepared by someone who is also following the Jay diet.

Cleansing the Body Before the Jay Festival
A common term associated with the 2022 Jay Festival is body cleansing, which help prepare the body for the transition to Jay food. It is recommended to start adjusting at least two days in advance:
- Day 1: Reduce the consumption of red meat and instead eat fish, milk, and eggs.
- Day 2: Increase fruit and vegetable intake while completely avoiding meat. This helps the body and digestive system adjust, making it easier to start the Jay diet the next day.
Elderly individuals are advised to choose easily digestible Jay foods. First-time participants don’t have to be so strict. they can start with three to five days of Jay eating to allow their bodies to gradually adapt. Some people may experience dizziness or frequent hunger as their body adjust.
