Tips to Rescue Your Skin After Songkran
Songkran 2023 flew by so fast. After days of getting drenched from morning to evening, braving the sun and water fights, even with sunscreen on, it just wasn’t enough. The result? Sunburned, irritated, red, and peeling skin. Now that the long holiday is over, it’s time to fix that damaged skin and bring back its glow. As always, Muang Thai Life Assurance has got your back with some easy skin recovery tips. No need to spend money at a clinic, just follow these steps at home, and your skin will be good as new.
Easy sunburn care at home
Sunburn can happen any day, especially under Thailand’s intense equatorial sun. If you’re out in direct sunlight for a long time without sunscreen or protective clothing, even just a short exposure can cause irritation and burning sensations. To prevent and heal sunburned skin, follow these steps:
- Cool down with a cold soak: After being in the sun for too long, your skin retains a lot of heat. Soaking in cool water can help bring the temperature down. Try adding 2–3 tablespoons of baking soda or 1 cup of oats to your bath and soak for about 15–20 minutes to soothe and repair sunburned skin. ❌Avoid swimming pools, as chlorine can worsen irritation. Also, don’t apply ice directly to burnt skin. It can cause further damage due to extreme cold.
- Apply aloe vera: Aloe vera contains salicylic acid, which has antibacterial, exfoliating, and healing properties. That’s why it’s commonly used for conditions like psoriasis, eczema, dry skin, and sunburn relief. If you don’t have access to fresh aloe vera, you can use 100% aloe vera gel instead. Just make sure it’s free from chemicals and fragrances to avoid irritation.
- Drink plenty of water: Drinking water helps keep your skin moisturized and supports its natural healing process. Aim for at least 8 glasses a day and avoid drinks like tea, coffee, and alcohol, as they dehydrate your body. Plain water is the best choice!
- Wear loose clothing to reduce friction: Sunburned skin is inflamed and needs time to heal. Wear loose-fitting clothes that don’t cling to your skin to avoid irritation. Fabrics made from natural fibers, like cotton or bamboo, are great choices as they allow good airflow.
- Do not pop blisters: If your skin develops blisters (a sign of second-degree sunburn), don’t pop or peel them! Let them heal naturally. If a blister bursts on its own, apply petroleum jelly 2–3 times a day to keep the area moisturized, then cover it with a plaster. In severe cases, seeing a dermatologist is recommended.
When should you see a doctor?
Sunburn has three levels of severity. The mild level causes pain and redness and will heal on its own within 3–5 days. The moderate level is more painful, with a burning sensation when touching the skin, and takes 1 week to heal. The severe level causes skin inflammation, intense burning, and blisters, which may take up to 2 weeks to heal. In addition to skin inflammation and a burning sensation, if you experience any of the following symptoms along with a sunburn, seek medical attention immediately:
- Severe pain and extensive
- blistering
- Fever and chills
- Facial swelling
- Dizziness or feeling faint
- Headache
- Confusion or disorientation
- Stomach pain
- Signs of dehydration
Sunburn is no joke. Even a short time in the sun without protection can secretly damage your skin. The best way to avoid this is by staying out of the sun between 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM, when UV rays are strongest. If you can’t avoid going out, always apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and wear protective clothing to shield your skin from sunburn and reduce the risk of skin cancer.
