Pneumonia Symptoms How to Spot the Warning Signs Before It Becomes Dangerous

Many people still underestimate pneumonia, thinking it’s not a serious condition. However, according to the Ministry of Public Health, Thailand reported 251,631 cases of pneumonia in 2023, representing a 30% increase from 2022. If left untreated, pneumonia can progress quickly and may even be life-threatening.

This guide will help you understand how to check for pneumonia symptoms, whether pneumonia is contagious, and how it differs from tuberculosis.

5. How to Prevent Pneumonia

Causes of Pneumonia

1. Causes of Pneumonia

Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs, commonly referred to as a “lung infection.” The most common type is infectious pneumonia, also known as “lung inflammation” or “lung fever.” Once pathogens enter the lungs, they cause inflammation of the alveoli (air sacs) and surrounding tissues. Causes can be grouped into two categories:

1.1 Infectious Pneumonia

The most common cause of pneumonia. The type of pathogen depends on various factors, including age, occupation, chronic illnesses, immune status, travel history, smoking habits, and environmental exposure.

  • Viruses: RSV, influenza, coronavirus
  • Bacteria: Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, atypical bacteria
  • Fungi: Rare but possible in immunocompromised patients

1.2 Non-infectious Pneumonia

Occurs due to irritants or external substances that affect the respiratory tract.

  • Dust, smoke, chemical fumes
  • Side effects from certain medications, such as chemotherapy or specific heart medications

2. Pneumonia Symptoms

Although causes may differ, pneumonia symptoms often overlap. Infectious pneumonia is more common and highly contagious compared to non-infectious pneumonia.

Key warning signs of pneumonia include:

  • High fever and chills – a common signal of infection that may spread to the lungs
  • Rapid heartbeat (over 100 bpm) – indicates the body is fighting infection; see a doctor promptly.
  • Chest pain – may suggest worsening lung inflammation.
  • Cough with phlegm – a classic respiratory infection symptom
  • Bloody sputum – a sign of bleeding inside the lungs
  • Shortness of breath – a dangerous symptom showing oxygen intake is impaired; requires urgent medical care.

Pneumonia Treatment

3. Pneumonia Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause, type of pathogen, and severity of the illness.

  • Antibiotic treatment – prescribed if the infection is caused by bacteria. Note: Antibiotic resistance is rising in certain bacteria, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae.
  • Symptom management – for viral or non-bacterial pneumonia. Doctors may prescribe fever reducers, bronchodilators, expectorants, IV fluids (for severe cases), oxygen therapy, or chest physiotherapy.
  • Treatment of complications – pneumonia can spread bacteria into the bloodstream (sepsis), cause lung abscesses, or lead to fluid buildup in the pleural cavity.

Can pneumonia go away on its own?

Mild pneumonia may resolve on its own, but severe cases can be fatal if left untreated. Medical care is strongly recommended, especially for those with underlying health conditions.

Foods and drinks to avoid during pneumonia recovery:

  • Coffee, tea, or any caffeinated beverages
  • Alcohol
  • Spicy or strong-smelling foods (may trigger coughing or nausea)
  • Fried foods (can irritate the throat or cause vomiting)
  • Fermented foods

Pneumonia vs. Tuberculosis: What’s the Difference?

Because both are respiratory infections, many people confuse pneumonia with tuberculosis (TB). While some symptoms overlap, there are key differences:

  • Pneumonia symptoms: Cough with phlegm, chest pain when coughing or breathing, fever, chills, rapid breathing, fatigue, muscle pain, nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting
  • Tuberculosis symptoms: Chronic cough with blood-tinged sputum, persistent low-grade fever, night sweats, pale/yellowish skin, unexplained weight loss

👉 Since the symptoms are similar, only a medical diagnosis can confirm whether it’s pneumonia or TB. If you notice prolonged coughing or breathing difficulties, seek medical attention promptly.

4. Is Pneumonia Contagious?

Yes. Pneumonia caused by infection can spread from person to person through various ways:

  • Coughing, sneezing, or breathing in close contact
  • Aspiration of saliva, food, or secretions from the digestive tract
  • Bacteria enter the bloodstream and spread.
  • Infection spreads from nearby organs to the lungs.
  • Certain medical procedures in hospitals, such as if the equipment is contaminated or not properly sanitized

5. How to Prevent Pneumonia

Pneumonia is one of the most common illnesses in Thailand and can be life-threatening if severe. The best protection is prevention. Here are simple steps to lower your risk:

  • Quit smoking
  • Wash your hands frequently and avoid crowded places.
  • Stay away from cigarette smoke, fire smoke, and vehicle exhaust fumes.
  • Don’t ignore flu or cold symptoms—get treated early.
  • Sleep well to strengthen your immune system.
  • Eat a balanced diet with all five food groups.
  • Exercise regularly
  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption to prevent bacteria from being aspirated into the lungs.

Keep yourself safe by building a strong immune system, getting regular health check-ups, and planning ahead with comprehensive health insurance from Muang Thai Life Assurance.
